Fashion color trends and web color trends

In the world of fashion it's pretty clear, colors change per year and even per season but what about web colors?

Pantone released the pantone fashion color spring 2009 report which you can download here and this is the short description:

Spring traditionally evokes a sense of freshness and new beginnings, with sprouting shoots and blossoming flowers that inspire designers to breakout of the winter doldrums. Bright colors return to the top 10 list for spring '09, as designers incorporate vibrant pops into their collections, yet temper the vibrancy with deeper, translucent or neutral tones.

"New York's fashion designers encourage hopeful attitudes with lively colors, while sophisticated, grounded hues address the need for stability in times of economic uncertainty," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute ©.

On the web there are trends in design also but it's probably not as visible as it is in fashion because most people don't change their site per season and most people visit sites from all over the internet and it's impossible for all those related or unrelated sites to change color pallet all at once because the trend seems to change in a certain direction.

Another difference I think is that websites are representing a brand in a different way than fashion does. In fashion you can't keep holding onto one color pallet for a few years just because it happens to be the colors your brand started with. Recognition in fashion is more aimed at the brands logo or to certain special details. On the web people seem to get used to the color pallet of a complete site and get a feeling of trust by the complete package, making changes to that needs to be well thought trough.

There have been times where lots of sites I visit used very light color pallets and times where many sites changed to darker color pallets but right now there seems to be a mix of both for a while already.

One thing that is happening more and more and will become even more visible in the future is the use of transparent layers because IE6 will be out of the picture finally and all major browsers including IE7 and up support transparent png. Beautiful things will be possible without having to worry about a browser not able to coop with your transparent images.

Here's some great color tools and sites for color inspiration to finish this post with.

If you have some tools or places that me and others should know about than please let us know.
