At jfoobar labs you will find "stuff" that is either cool, useful or for learning purposes. We hope to create a pretty nice selection over time. Remember, we need it to be fun.
With this Joomla! 1.5+ plugin you can create an content item (article) for registered users on your site and when a visitor clicks on the article detail (or read more) from a specific user, the user details page is rendered. This logic is used on the JFoobar site.
To use this plugin you of course first need to install and activate it in the extension manager. From there the usage is pretty straight forward. You first need to create a new category where the user details will be listed, this is done via the category manager. Then add the user profiles as regular articles. Here you need to do something special, please add the user id in the field "key reference" of the advanced parameters tab in the article. This way the plugin will know what article it should select.
After setting up the user biograph you can configure the plug-in. Please select the category that you want to plug-in to render the information, and don't forget to list the category where all user profiles are collected. The plug-in renders some defaulted output that can be configured through your CSS.
Have fun using it!
This is a much needed feature, but I wonder if it would be more efficient to link to the author contact page, rather than making new categories and articles. I suggested this in the Joomla forum, and others seem to agree with the idea. I believe this gives added functionality while also using existing resources well. Either way, Joomla needs an easy way to link authors and their articles.
The benefit of having the plugin like this is that you can also create a menu item to list all authors for example and the bio's can be short or large, images or not, whatever like a normal article. Thats what I needed when I created the plugin at first.
We've been thinking about features like "Last 5 articles from this author" beneath the introtext so maybe in future releases. :-)
Check out Ercan Ozkaya's Author Details extension. It's lovely!
Since Ercan's a member of our JPress Team - and since he already contributed his Page Title extension to the cause - I'll see if he is willing to add this to JPress.
It's a mighty sweet extension with a little Mootools action that makes it fun.
Ooops! Would someone add this link to my comment above? http://ercan.us/extensions/author-details.html
Yes, I tried the Author Details plugin, but unfortunately it conflicted with another plugin. I actually prefer jfoobar's plugin anyhow, because it allows you to display text directly on the article. I just would like it even better if it would link to already existing contacts. :)
Actually, the capability I was speaking of was the article listings. I think Ercan has further developed this since I last saw it. It's always been neat showing the last NN articles for the selected article - but now it appears to have much more capabilities. Very cool!
Do you remember what the plugin might have conflicted with? It uses default Mootools - but it might be using an ID (i.e., 'toggleothers' or 'otherarticles') that another plugin was using.
Right you are: that is the plugin I currently use; for me, the article listing is more useful than the author link. I thought you were referring to "Author Link" - which conflicts with "Author Details," I suppose because they both use Mootools. It would be wonderful if these functions were integral in Joomla, but short of that, if they were in one plugin (maybe "jfoobar_author_bio"? ... :)
I spent some time working with this plugin and find it a clever solution to the clear need for better linking between authors and their articles. However, for a site that is rather large, it is time consuming. First, it appears that the plugin can only address one category at a time. I tested it on a site that has 5 sections and 25 categories (and several hundred articles). I hoped this tool would work site wide, but it does not appear to. Perhaps I need multiple occurrences of the plugin? (ouch) Second, every author article must tie to an user account by means of manually looking up the user id number, then entering it in the author article. We have 70+ authors, so this takes time as well. The combination of these issues will likely prevent me from using the plugin for now. Also, I noticed that the styling on the jfoobar site is not included in the plugin; hopefully some hints toward styling the displayed text will also become available. This plugin is a good start, and if I was launching a new site I would likely use it.
Are there any way to make this plugin to work with multiple categories?
Can you explain in more detail what you mean?
"Please select the category that you want to plug-in to render the information,"
I can select only one category and plugin show Author biography in that category, but I want to use plugin for all article on the site, which are in different categories. Is it possible?
You can select multiple categories and section, but am not sure it will do what you want. Maybe you can try that (hold CTRL key when selecting multiple categories).
Thank you. It looks like that the problem is with my browser (Debian version of Firefox) :(
Hi Folks,
First I would like to say thank you for this nice and very usefull Plugin. I had a long test run with it and finaly installed it on the live Site. So what I didnt catch during the testphase is The strings: "About the author...." and: "More about...." I first have been looking for a language file en-GB.plg_ but without luck, I found them in: jfoobar_author_bio.php file and changed them there.
But as there are no other Text related in the Frontend could you perhabs add does two bits in the Parameter Settings of the Plugin for other not english Native Sites?
Would be realy appriciated...
Cheers
Pete
Hi. First off, this is a great plugin but I am unable to select multiple categories in the "Show for Categories" dropdown in the plugin parameters admin panel. This field has a dropdown but I can only select 1 of the categories. I have tried it both on IE 7 and Firefox 3.0.6 with Windows XP OS. Can you tell me where the configuration is stored so I can just manually edit it? Thanks.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get this to work. I have put the User ID in the article (the real article they wrote, not the Bio, right?) and then went and chose the category.
Nothings appears at the bottom of the article I am calling to. Is there more detailed instructions on what I am to do somewhere?
A new version is released, you now will be able to select multiple categories. Have fun using it!
This is a great idea but it seems to not work under a shared hosting: I've got this PHP warning:
Call-time pass-by-reference has been deprecated; If you would like to pass it by reference, modify the declaration of [runtime function name](). If you would like to enable call-time pass-by-reference, you can set allow_call_time_pass_reference to true in your INI file.
Hello, thank you very much for this plugin. Pls integrate with Gravatar/CB avatar ... it would be great.
Hello,
Is there a way to use this plugin in frontpage editing. I have a blog with multiple Authors and would like them to insert their ID in the frontend so that they not have to go to the backend.
Is that possible?
Thanks,
huwy

How about create a new plugin to work with this one: a new plugin to show a list of articles on the author's page.
When the visitor viewing the author's page, this new plugin will automatically show a list of all his articles at the end of introduction.
The list can be only titles, or titles and IntroText, or Image at left, and Title and Introtext at right.
Of course, if the author has published many articles, there need a parameter for pagination in the new plugin.
Thanks for your great jobs!
